ULTRASOUND

An ultrasound examination is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. Ultrasounds are able to capture the size, structure and shape of many body parts by "visualizing" what is beneath the skin. This technology is especially accurate at seeing the interface between solid and fluid filled spaces that cannot be seen with conventional x-rays.

Doctors use ultrasound during pregnancy since there is no radiation involved; surgeons use ultrasound to assess pains in organs, tissues, and vessels or to detect abnormal masses, such as tumors, gallstones, kidney stones, or liver disease.

• Abdominal Ultrasounds (including gallbladder, liver and spleen):
Patients should not drink or eat anything after 10 p.m. the night before the test.

Pelvic Ultrasounds:
Patients should drink 48oz. (6 cups) of water at least one hour prior to the test.

Renal Ultrasounds:
Patients should not drink or eat anything at least six hours before the test.

All other Ultrasounds:
    No preparation is required.

An Ultrasound is a safe and painless procedure that uses a transducer to transmit sound waves to the organ of interest. The sound waves bounce on the organ tissue and the echoes are captured by the transducer which transforms them into images. During the procedure the radiologist or sonographer applies a water-based gel on the area of interest and scan the area of interest until a desired image is captured.

All of our diagnostic examinations are interpreted by Board-Certified Radiologists. The results of your Ultrasound examination will be sent to your referring physician as soon as they are interpreted. It is the patients´ responsibility to contact their referring physician to discuss the results of their examination and ask for further recommendations.
